SUPPORT groups for men with prostate cancer have been launched in south Warwickshire.
With recent figures showing a record-high of 12,000 deaths from prostate cancer in 2017, the condition has become the most common cancer among men in the UK.
Charity Prostate Cancer UK predicts by 2030 it will be the most commonly diagnosed of all cancers.
The charity’s new South Warwickshire supports groups – in Leamington, Stratford and Shipston – allow patients to discuss symptoms, procedures and likely outcomes.
Group chairman Doug Badger said: “The demand from men newly diagnosed or facing the threat of positive tests is growing.
“We now also have a ‘buddy scheme’ whereby those going through particular treatments can talk directly to someone who has been through that treatment.
“We are finding that this direct one-to-one dialogue is valuable in so many different ways – it’s all about supporting and helping men to talk about and share concerns and issues for what can be a life changing and very difficult time for those newly diagnosed with this cancer and their families.”
The charity’s aims are to promote better diagnosis, to ensure it is caught early, better treatments, and better understanding of prostate cancer, so the most appropriate and successful treatments can be offered to patients.
