Project worth £6million to tackle rush hour congestion at major Warwick gateway

WORK is underway to tackle rush hour congestion on a major gateway into Warwick.

Increasing traffic has left the Stanks Island roundabout at the junction of the A46 with the Birmingham Road unable to cope during peak morning and evening periods.

The works, set to take around nine months to complete, aim to improve the flow of traffic, prevent queues on the A46 slip roads, and prepare for future increases in traffic.

The £6million project – being funded as part of a government package for the region through Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership, together with contributions from Warwickshire County Council – will feature traffic control signals which can adjust to increased traffic levels at busy times to help keep vehicles moving.

And shared pedestrian and cycling facilities also aim to create better links between the town centre, residential and business areas and out towards Budbrooke and Hatton.

Council chiefs say all works will be completed outside peak hours to ease disruption.

County transport spokesman Coun Jeff Clarke said: “We know that there are a number of transport pressures on Stanks Island and the Birmingham Road corridor in Warwick, with queueing on the A46 slip roads during the morning rush hour being a particular concern. These works will do a lot to ease that and commuters will see a huge improvement once they are finished.

“The works will also make it possible to cycle or walk into Warwick from the surrounding areas contributing to Warwickshire’s commitment to increasing opportunities for sustainable travel and reduced carbon emissions.

“With any works programme of this size, there will unfortunately be some disruption to journeys while the works are ongoing. Residents, drivers and businesses in the nearby area can be assured that we will be working with contractors to keep this to an absolute minimum.”
