POLICE in Warwickshire are preparing for ‘extra pressures’ in the midst of World Cup celebrations and a visit from President Trump.
Officers say they have been planning for a busy week as England take on Croatia in the semi-final tomorrow (Wednesday) and a number of protests takes place across the county as the controversial president arrives in the UK the following day.
Warwickshire Police said although it would be increasing the numbers of officers on duty, it would need to prioritise the more serious incidents and speak to others involved in less serious offences over the phone rather than in person.
Supt David Gardner said: “While football might be coming home, our main aim is to ensure fans in Warwickshire get home safely.
“You may have seen media coverage about pressures on policing caused by the World Cup, the warm weather, the USA presidential visit and other local summer events.
“This is providing significant challenges for Warwickshire Police and our partners. Therefore, we have been working hard to plan for a busy week.
“We have been experiencing higher than normal levels of demand on our service and we expect this to continue throughout the week. As always, all calls will be assessed and responded to appropriately, with the most serious incidents being prioritised.
“We are committed to ensuring we provide help to anyone in need. We are increasing the number of officers and staff on duty to ensure we can do this.”
He added if locals needed to pass on information it was better to speak to the Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNT) and only call 101 if a response was needed, or 999 in an emergency.
