Plans for safety revamp at Kineton MoD base given green light

THE BIGGEST ammunition depot in Western Europe is to undergo a safety revamp.

The B4100 Wentworth Avenue entrance to the MoD Kineton is currently along an unlit single carriageway with a 50mph speed limit, and bosses at the army base feared queuing lorries could cause an accident.

They said lorries pose a ‘serious risk’ as they are often forced to queue on the road waiting to access the site – which is the largest and most modern ammunition storage depot in Western Europe, receiving and distributing weapons and explosives to UK armed forces across the world.

But planning permission has been granted by Stratford District Council for a new approach and guard room to be built at the site.

It will include a new roundabout further up the road, along with a car park for up to 34 vehicles to wait before they are given clearance to pass through to the base.

Project manager Stuart Gallacher said: “It’s great these improvements have been approved. They will definitely improve the experience of staff and visitors to the site, but also that of local people who have to travel on the B4100 and may get caught in the traffic as a result of queues to enter DM Kineton.

“We’ve worked hard to make sure the plans address the problems of the current design and look forward to getting to work.”

The approved plans have also been welcomed by commanding officer Lt Col Jonathan Williams.

He said: “It is fantastic news that the redevelopment of the Kineton main gate is to take place. We see this as a positive change for all those living and working here but also for local residents and road users of B4100.”
