New-look hotel prepares to open its doors

AN HISTORIC hotel in Stratford is set to welcome guests in the new year following a multi-million pound facelift.

Hotel Indigo Stratford upon Avon, formerly The Falcon Hotel, will open its doors in early February after a major 18 month restoration and refurbishment.

The black and white half timbered grade 2 listed building, which dates back to the 16th century, sits on Chapel Street

opposite Shakespeare’s former schoolroom and his final Stratford home New Place.

Stepnell, the Warwickshire-based construction contractors, stripped back every part of the building as part of the restoration to create a 93-room boutique hotel, complete with lounges, a restaurant and bar.

As a listed building, like had to be replaced with like, and everything that could be kept has been including many of the original oak beams which date back to 1622. Only beams beyond repair were replaced with 18 year air dried European oak.

Traditional methods have been used for the repairs. Lath and plaster areas have undergone extensive works using lime plaster and new riven oak lathes.

And a contractor specialising in repairs and conservation of historic timber frames, which carried out major works to the Globe Theatre in London, also worked on the hotel.

The building was originally a private home for 150 years before it first became a hostelry.

Simon Hall, general manager at Hotel Indigo Stratford upon Avon, said “Through significant investment, St James Hotels have played a vital role in restoring this magnificent Tudor building for residents and visitors to enjoy for centuries to come.

“Stratford-upon-Avon is such a great historical town with a first class range of attractions and Hotel Indigo Stratford upon Avon is the ideal base to explore everything this literary town has to offer.

“We believe in providing more than just a comfy bed but a unique experience and that restaurants and bars are the heart and soul of any good neighbourhood. We’re confident Hotel Indigo Stratford-upon-Avon will become the number one boutique hotel to stay at in this town and we look forward to opening our doors.”
