Marathon runner gearing up to take on his 477th run

Laura Kearns 29th Mar, 2017

MARATHON man David Philips is gearing up to take on his 477th run.

The 72 year-old Claverdon grandad knows the route for the London Marathon by heart after running it annually for the past 17 years.

He takes part in as many marathons as possible, with his ultimate goal to complete 500 and raise £100,000 for the Brain and Spine Foundation – a charity he is an ambassador for.

And he is now only £2,000 off his target.

The chartered accountant – who will captain ‘Team Phillips’ at the London Marathon on Sunday April 23 – told the Observer: “It seems ages ago I started my quest – too long ago to remember. Since then I’ve raised £98,000 in London Marathons and the goal is still that elusive £100,000.

“My running team and I want to support this amazing charity and the work they do for people suffering from neurological conditions, brain tumours and associated conditions.

“They are only a small charity and need all the help possible to carry out their goals.”

David recently visited Warwick Rotary Club members to tell them about his long relationship with running, which began in 1982 when he made a bet to run the Coventry marathon.

Five years later he signed up to the Massey Ferguson running club, which he previously captained and is still a member of.

Since then his hobby has taken him all over the world from running through the pyramids in Egypt to the skyscapers of New York.

And David – who is an accountant with Phillips and Becker Ltd – has no plans to retire yet either.

He added: “We are the busiest since I started in 1975. There is about as much chance of me retiring as I have of quitting running and fundraising.”
