VETERAN Kenilworth journalist Peter Rhodes will be talking about a career that took him from the Siege of Sarajevo to the first Gulf War, the Arctic and the Falklands .

Mr Rhodes, who was chief feature writer on the Wolverhampton Express & Star, will be giving his talk Hacking It! at the monthly meeting of the Kenilworth Civic Society on Tuesday (November 20).

His assignments included the First Gulf War, the end of Empire in Hong Kong and the 1989 Malta Summit which ended the Cold War.

He flew to the North Pole on an attempt to rescue the polar explorer Pen Hadow and he was also on the first RAF Hercules to break the siege of Sarajevo in 1992.

Mr Rhodes said: “I was fortunate to be a reporter in a golden age of regional journalism The job took me to places I would never otherwise have seen and to people in extremes of joy and despair.

“But it also produced some funny moments and a bundle of anecdotes including how to arrange penguins for a photo-shoot and why you should never trust a cat.”

The civic society meets at the Senior Citizens Club, off Abbey End car park, in Kenilworth. The talk will start at 7.30pm. Entry is free for and £3 for non-members.
