Intrepid traveller with Warwickshire roots tries to trace Moreton Morrell class of '67

AN INTREPID traveller with Warwickshire roots is trying to track down his college classmates after more than five decades.

Former Moreton Morrell College student Robert Peace moved across the world after completing his agricultural course in 1967.

The former Ansley resident moved to Switzerland, before joining the Minnesota Agricultural Student Trainee Programme. The 72-year-old has lived in the Midwestern state ever since, working in farming and later as a motorcoach driver across the US.

But his life in the United States has meant he has lost touch with the friends he made at the college – then known as Warwickshire College of Agriculture.

Since retiring from driving, Robert has been searching out his old classmates and has already uncovered another former Moreton Morrell student -Raymond Kirkpatrick – who lives in Western Australia.

It has led him to wonder how far-spread the rest of the class of 67 is, and whether there are more of the group dotted around the globe.

Robert said: “With covid-19, I’ve had a lot more time to spend at the computer and try to contact old classmates, but the problem is for the most part we haven’t spoken in 40 years.

“It was our generation that really started the travelling revolution in England, so I do wonder if more of my classmates followed a similar path.

“As with everything in life, people move on and you lose track of them. But now I’m hoping to re-find those friendships and find out what those people I remember so fondly from Moreton have done with their lives.”

Some of the names he recalls are David Judd from Coventry, his former roommate David Cartwright from Arley and Neil Pointon who farmed at Chippenham.

He added: “I actually get a Christmas card every year from Neil’s wife, but it never has a return address on so I haven’t been able to write to him.

“I roomed with David and we had some great times. I got in trouble on my first day. On the third floor at Moreton Hall there was a ledge outside the windows. We were told not to go out there but of course I did it anyway.”
