Guide Dogs urgently seeking homes for four-legged mums in Warwickshire

GUIDE Dogs is urgently looking for 50 loving homes for its four-legged mums.

The charity is short on homes across Warwickshire for guide dog mums – who have litters of puppies which go on to provide life-changing support to people living with sight loss.

Ian and Irene Scott from Warwick have cared for Labrador Nica since 2017, when she was around one-year-old.

She needs walking, care and company like other dogs, and the charity covers food and vet fees.

She has had two litters of puppies in the couple’s home. The pups then move to the breeding centre in Leamington when they are around six-weeks-old.

Irene said: “We love looking after Nica and volunteering for Guide Dogs. I don’t think there’s anything not to like.

“You get this beautiful, well-trained dog and you get the absolute pleasure of looking after pups, it’s just such a great experience.

“Once the pups start opening their eyes and they’re mobile, it’s great fun.

“We made the garden safe and the pups were outside a lot of the time.

“You get so much support from the charity when your guide dog mum has a litter, staff are always on hand to help.”

The charity is urging anyone who lives within an hour’s drive of the breeding centre and would like to care for a guide dog mum to get in touch.

Charity spokeswoman Kelly Newton said: “We’re in desperate need of homes in Warwickshire for our guide dog mums, who play an integral part in helping us to provide our life-changing services to people with sight loss.

“Looking after a guide dog mum is incredibly rewarding and we provide all of the training required to ensure you have the skills you need to provide our dogs with the best care.

“If you could help us, we’d urge you to get in touch.”
