Grateful mum thanks Zoe's Place with online art auction

A MUM whose son has been under the care of Zoë’s Place Baby Hospice for more than three years has organised an online art auction in an effort to help keep funds coming in for the hospice.

Around 30 items, all donated by artists especially for Zoë’s Place, will be up for grabs in the event, being held over seven days on Facebook.

Claire Baines, whose three-year-old son Joel is under the care of the hospice, has organised the event with the support of other parents in the hospice’s dedicated Little Fighters parents’ fund-raising group.

Claire, who also has a nine-month-old son Jamie, said: “Zoë’s Place has been an absolute lifeline for more than three years. Joel needs to be with someone 24/7 who is fully-trained to deal with his needs and without the hospice there would have been absolutely no respite from this round-the-clock care.

“Zoë’s Place relies on fund-raising events in the main to keep the coins rolling in but with no opportunity to organise events at the moment we thought an online auction would be a great way to help top up the funds. It’s something that anyone and everyone can take part in, wherever they are, all from the comfort of their own home and all in aid of a fantastic cause.

“The good news is that already we have received so much interest in the auction that some of the lots, which we were originally starting with bids of £5, may start a little higher – which of course is even better for the hospice.”

Joel was born at University Hospital in Coventry with a laryngeal cleft – a gap between his food and windpipe – and Claire, from Lutterworth, was told he ran the risk of food and liquid getting into his lungs.

When he was just two weeks old he had an operation at Birmingham Children’s Hospital to attempt to repair his cleft and a tracheostomy was fitted to give him a safe airway.

Joel still remains nil by mouth and breathing with the aid of the tracheostomy while doctors continue to rectify his defect.

The online auction takes place on Facebook from 11am today until 9pm on Sunday April 19.

To view the lots and access the auction, or to find out more information, search for ‘Art Auction In Aid of Zoe’s Place, Coventry’, on Facebook and request to join the group.
