A CHARITY supporting Warwickshire children is looking to raise £35,000 to celebrate its 35th anniversary.

The Friendship Project for Children has been working with local children since 1986 by helping those in need of extra support.

Those aged between six and 16 are referred to the charity through social services and are matched with an ‘older friend’ who takes them out and spends time with them for a few hours each week.

Since it began it has helped more than 1,500 local children, some who are young carers or who have siblings with a condition resulting in a lack of support and attention at home.

The time spent with their older friend can be anything from a walk in the park or baking to activities they would not experience such as a visit to the cinema, horse riding or bowling.

And to help the charity continue its services it is trying to raise £35,000 in its 35th year.

A charity spokeswoman said: “Help us to help more children have wonderful experiences. £35 will help pay for three outings for one of the younger friends.

“Since the charity started it has supported over 1500 local children, and the time invested has seen the self-esteem of the child grow, and in some cases improvement in behaviour and attainment at school too.”
