Flavour of Japan heading to Leamington

Stratford Editorial 25th Jan, 2022   0

LEAMINGTON is set to host its first ever Japanese Festival.

A free celebration of all things Japanese takes place in The Pump Rooms on Sunday (January 30), from 11am to 5pm.

There will be live performances throughout the day from Japanese drumming team Taiko West and contemporary theatre performer Fuyuko Morimura to pop singer songwriter Mion.

Visitors will be able to have-a-go at traditional Japanese arts and crafts like Ikebana (Japanese flower arranging), calligraphy, Saori (a hand weaving method) and Origami.

For foodies, freshly-made authentic food will be on hand, from vegan curries to tapas and sweet treats to Savory brown rice and homebred Trout (Masu) – washed down by saké-based cocktail Shima.

And visitors will also have the chance to join in a traditional tea ceremony.

An exhibition of origami from children at Milverton Primary School will also be unveiled – called ‘Mottainai’ which means reduce, reuse and recycle. It has been created with help from the festival’s creative team using recycled paper from the school.

Visitors can also browse stalls for glass, ceramics and jewellery, while15-year-old local Manga and Anime artist Hugo will also be showing off his work.

Resident and organiser Milagros Kuga said: ‘We’ve put together an amazing day of everything to do with Japanese culture. I wanted to share a little bit of the country I love with the community here in Leamington.”
