Festive tunes at The Leamington Music Christmas Festival

Stratford Editorial 4th Dec, 2021   0

FESTIVE tunes can be heard at three concerts in The Leamington Music Christmas Festival – with mulled wine and mince pies served in the intervals.

Medieval group Joglaresa start things off on December 7, followed by The York Waits on December 15 and The Carice Singers on December 21.

Joglaresa return to St Mary’s Chuch in Warwickwith a new programme, Lullay Myn Lykynge. All seven members of the group sing and the instruments they bring with them include harp, fidel, dulcimer and percussion.

The programme includes some two dozen carols and dances, mostly from the 13th to 16th centuries and they come not just from all over Britain, but Spain, France and Scandinavia.

The York Waits, with singer Deborah Catterall, will be at The Dream Factory in Warwick for the first time with The Waits’ Wassail.

The six members of the Waits will deliver songs, carols and dances from medieval and renaissance times played on an array of instruments including bagpipes, crumhorns, percussion, recorders, sackbuts and shawms. Well-known favourites will be heard as they might have sounded yesteryear.

The Carice Singers return to St Mark’s Church in Leamington with Christmas with the Carice Singers, directed by George Parris, who founded the choir ten years ago.

The singers will be joined by the well-known Leamington organist, Adrian Moore. Familiar carols end with O Come, all ye faithful and are mixed with English and continental composers ranging from Berlioz to Sibelius.

Other Finnish composers are included which reflect the years that George Parris has spent completing his studies in Helsinki.

Festival director Richard Phillips said: “Leamington Music always provides a very different series of concerts in December when all promoters and choirs want to celebrate the Christmas message. Our Christmas Festival brings the Autumn Season to a climax and over the preceding eleven weeks we will have put on seventeen concerts, all of them much enjoyed by enthusiastic audiences.”

Leamington Music will be announcing its complete plans for the Spring season in the near future. This will start at the end of January with the Monteverdi String Band in Warwick on January 25 and the Consone String Quartet in Leamington on January 28.
