CELEBRATED opera singer Roderick Williams has become patron of Stratford Choral Society.

Mr Williams is well-known for his work as a baritone with Opera North and Scottish Opera and more recently with Garsington Opera, English National Opera and The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in major roles by composers from Monteverdi to Benjamin Britten.

His recordings include songs by English composers such as Vaughan Williams, Benjamin Britten and Gerald Finzi. In 2014 he performed at the Last Night of the Proms, in 2016 was awarded Singer of the Year by the Royal Philharmonic Society and in 2017 he received an OBE for services to music.

He also recently performed at Stratford upon Avon Festival, close to his home in Kineton.

Mike Barrie, chairman of Stratford Choral Society, said: “We are very pleased to welcome Roddy as our honorary patron and we look forward to a long and fruitful relationship. Roddy is an internationally renowned singer and a great supporter of music here in Stratford upon Avon.”

Mr Williams said: “It gives me great pleasure indeed to be associated with Stratford Choral Society. I’ve lived in Warwickshire for more than 20 years and, wherever my music career takes me in the world, it’s always wonderful to return here and celebrate the place I call home.

“Any chance to connect with local music-making and really put some roots down is something I seize with gratitude. I look forward to forging ever-closer links with Stratford Choral Society and supporting their musical endeavours in the future.”
