Bidford Bridge has reopened

BIDFORD Bridge has finally reopened to traffic.

The 15th century bridge had been closed to cars since August to allow for repair works following an accident which caused significant damage to the Grade I listed structure.

A taxi became wedged after crashing into the wall of the narrow bridge, damaging the parapet and leaving it structurally unsafe.

The bridge reopened on Friday (December 13), two weeks behind schedule, following complex repairs. They included employing specialist stonemasons to carry out the work, and permission was also needed from Historic England as the historic bridge is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Warwickshire County Council’s transport spokesperson Coun Jan Matecki, said: “This has been a complex and challenging project, requiring specialist skills and careful planning. We’re grateful to everyone involved for their hard work and dedication in ensuring the bridge is restored to its former glory.”

The diversion route via Binton Bridge was also removed on the same day as the road reopened.

Coun Matecki added: “This is great news for local businesses and residents ahead of the Christmas period. We know that the road closure has caused some disruption, so we’re pleased to be able to lift these restrictions and allow traffic to flow freely once again.”

WCC thanked residents, visitors and businesses for their patience and understanding during the repair works.
