Application expected for London Eye-style wheel in Stratford

AN APPLICATION to put a London Eye-style wheel in Stratford is expected to be submitted soon.

Stratford District Council was approached by three operators keen to run an observation wheel on the Recreation Ground car park during the spring and summer.

And back in November members of the authority agreed to a six month trial from spring.

The operators all want a site close to the river and the theatre and – subject to weight limits – council officers said it would be possible to site a wheel on part of the Recreation Ground car park next to The View restaurant.

The successful operator would likely be made to pay a £10,000 deposit against any potential damage to the car park.

The proposals have so far divided opinion with some arguing a wheel would be out of keeping with the area and others saying it could help attract more visitors to the town.

Although an application is yet to be formally submitted to the council, it is anticipated within the coming weeks.

If granted permission, the wheel is expected to be around 50 metres high – about a third of the size of the London Eye.
