ANTI-HS2 campaigners have been removed by police after forming a blockade outside the compound in Cubbington.
Two Stop HS2 protesters were ‘locked-on’ – tethered together by their arms through a heavy metal pipe – in front of the gates to the Rugby Road compound, to obstruct access for construction workers felling trees in the area.
Police attended the site, where other activists have been camping in trees.
Despite being removed by authorities, the protesters insist the fight will go on.
Campaigner Matt Bishop said: “We are going to fight to save the woodland until Boris Johnson is deferred in a vote of no confidence. We want to save our precious ancient woodland. HS2 don’t think about the natural environment, the trees, or the community with any care or kindness and that’s what’s missing.
“Even if it still happens here, we want to keep disrupting as the construction work moves up north to try and save any woodland we can.”
An Hs2 spokeswoman argued the high speed rail would be a greener way to travel and beneficial to the fight against climate change.
She said: “These protests are a risk to the safety of the protestors, our staff and the general public, and put unnecessary strain on the emergency services.
“All leading environmental organisations agree that climate change is the biggest future threat to wildlife and habitats in the UK. HS2 will provide a cleaner, greener way to travel and help the country’s fight against climate change.
“We’d urge environmental groups to join us in getting people out of their cars, off planes and onto low-carbon, high speed rail.”
Construction work began last week on the 190km controversial rail line, of which 54km will cut through the heart of Warwickshire, resulting in the loss of ancient woodland in Cubbington and surrounding areas.
