HIS Only Sonnet: An Evening of Poetry, Old and New is at The Loft Theatre for one night only on May 20.
Poets have been enthralled and challenged by the sonnet ever since it was imported from Italy to England in the 16th century, and the same is true for Paul Curran, author of five books of poetry and a regular contributor of a ‘Poetry Corner’ feature to local radio stations.
Stratford resident Paul will discuss how the sonnet form has met the particular needs of almost every major poet since Petrarch. The sonnets of Wordsworth, Keats, Larkin, Shelley, Shakespeare and others will be heard alongside Paul’s work in an evening which hopes to illustrate the lasting appeal of the sonnet.
Loft artistic director Sue Moore said: “Paul – a professional actor from film, TV and stage (and also the Loft) – fell in love with poetry at Oxford and has written and published over 200 poems. He has curated a wonderful evening of the very best and most significant poems ever written. Reading them is one thing, but hearing them read is quite different.”
