Noel Coward's The Vortex at Leamington's Loft Theatre

PROMISCUITY abounds in 1920’s London high society in Noel Coward’s The Vortex at Leamington’s Loft Theatre.

Nicky, a young musician, returns home from a spell savouring the delights and decadence of Paris. During his sojourn in the French capital he has acquired not only a fiancée but also some dubious new habits.

During his absence, his socialite mother Florence has been sowing her own wild oats, amusing herself with a string of lovers half her age. Whilst initially the partying and sparkling wit continues, it inevitably leads to a highly charged emotional showdown between mother and son.

Coward wrote play when just 24, penning the lead role of Nicky for himself. When it was first performed in 1924 its scandalous storyline shocked many.

Following a long professional career in theatre, radio, television and film, this is Director Michael Rolfe’s first production for The Loft.

Michael said: “For my debut I was looking for something challenging and The Vortex ticked all my boxes. In it Coward boldly presents subjects – alcoholism, drugs and promiscuity – that 1920s high society carefully swept under the carpet, while still retaining all the wit and charm for which he is so widely known.”

The Vortex runs at The Loft Theatre from October 25 to November 4.
