Tourist experts have looked into the hashtags on social media for some of the UK’s largest cities in order to determine what UK residents and tourists consider to be the most Instagram-worthy locations, attractions and landmarks across the country.

The study analysed the top Instagram posts for one major city in each region of the UK, finding that the most commonly posted attraction or landmark in each city was as follows:

·        Birmingham, West Midlands – Commonwealth Games (33.33%)

·        Blackpool, North West – Blackpool Pleasure Beach (33.33%)

·        Brighton, South East – Brighton Pier (30%)

·        Gloucester, South West – Gloucester Docks (16.66%)

·        Cardiff, Wales – Cardiff Bay (16.66%)

·        Edinburgh, Scotland – Victoria Street (13.33%)

·        London, London – the London Eye (13.33%)

·        Nottingham, East Midlands – Wollaton Hall (10%)

·        Peterborough, East of England – Peterborough Cathedral (10%)

·        Sheffield, Yorkshire – Hillsborough Park (10%)

·        Newcastle, North East – St. James’ Park (6.66%)

·        Belfast, Northern Ireland – CastleCourt Shopping Centre (6.66%)

With the Commonwealth Games in full swing, host city Birmingham’s hashtag is full of pictures of the various ceremonies, decorations, and events.

On the Commonwealth Games front, there are snaps of the opening ceremony in Alexander Stadium, Perry the Bull mascot at Black Sabbath Bridge and the Queen’s Baton Relay passing through Birmingham Women’s and Children’s hospital.

Perry the mascot has been having a brilliant time at the Games. You may have spotted him cheering on athletes, meeting fans, high fiving volunteers and dancing at the Festival sites.

From star appearances on live TV from Victoria Square and Centenary Square, to Netball, Hockey, Beach Volleyball, Lawn Bowls and much much more, our brilliant Brummie bull has been popping up across the city, racking up a whopping 100 appearances in the first few days of the Games.

Where will you find him next? Keep your eyes peeled for the beloved colourful bull and try and instagram him if you can.

He’s been visiting every Birmingham 2022 venue, so be sure to give him a wave and high five!

Perry also has his own trail across Birmingham City Centre with 17 physical statues and 8 digital avatars to find. The trail, in aid of Sport Relief, will give you the opportunity to participate in fun exercises, see Birmingham’s sites and soak up the atmosphere of the Games.

Another high performing attraction was Blackpool Pleasure Beach, with various posts of the iconic Blackpool Tower itself alongside various festival rides. Similarly, Brighton’s Pier was the local landmark which Instagram users favour posting, leading the way with 30% of posts focused on the pier.

A classic tourist destination and England’s capital – it was hardly a major shock to see London’s photos were topped by classic tourism hotspots and photo opportunities like Big Ben, the London Eye and the London Underground.

Rebecca Clay, Tourism & Destination Marketing Manager of www.visitgloucester.co.uk, commented:

“The variance of posts across all the regions in the UK was very interesting to compare, with one-off events like the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham leading feeds, while household name tourist attractions like Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Brighton Pier firmly hold their own too.

“While many are quick to deem Instagram as nothing more than a vehicle for people to warp their public perception by boasting luxury holidays and frivolous spending, it can also be a great tool to share UK attractions, culture and landmarks to a global audience.”
