Adopt a pet with a difference this Christmas

Stratford Editorial 27th Nov, 2021   0

A HEN charity is urging people to have a clucky Christmas with a difference.

The British Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT) is holding its last few rehoming events of 2021 for hens saved from slaughter, including one in Kineton on Sunday, December 5.

And anyone who has been thinking about getting a new pet for Christmas, is being urged to rehome a rescued hen or two.

Trust founder Jane Howorth said: “Hens make the most wonderful pets, they’re funny, curious, affectionate little creatures that are simply a delight to have around – especially at Christmas.

“I know hen-keepers who love to make their pet hens part of their festivities by buying them presents, decorating their coops and giving them special dinners and foodie treats. Pet hens really do become part of the family, just like our other furrier animal companions.

“And, by adopting a pet hen and giving her a good home, you get that extra feel-good, fuzzy feeling – after all it is the season of goodwill – as well as have the joy of seeing your hen transform from a slightly bedraggled, bare girl into a loving, feathery friend.

“Of course, it’s important to reiterate that, just like the Dogs Trust say, ‘a dog is for life and not just for Christmas’ – the same applies to hens.”

The BHWT saves 60,000 hens from slaughter every year.

There is no fee for adopting a hen but donations to cover adoption costs and hen welfare campaigning work are encouraged.

Potential adopters must register at bhwt.org.uk before Thursday December 2.
