New riverside project aims to reduce congestion and improve air quality in Stratford

A PROJECT to transform part of the riverside in Stratford aims to create green routes into town, reduce congestion and improve air quality.

The Riverside Green Corridor scheme will cover the area from the Fisherman’s car park to Seven Meadows Road.

The project is thanks to an award of £1.5million by Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership to Stratford District Council (SDC) working in partnership with Stratford Town Trust.

The trust says the project will also revitalise the river front and provide ‘high quality public space’, encouraging residents and visitors to spend time outdoors.

An initial design has been commissioned which presents ideas as to how the space might be used. It is unlikely all of the aspirations will be met from this funding but it is hoped that over time, the final concept design will act as a long-term blueprint for the area.

SDC leader Tony Jefferson said: “This is an exciting development that will create attractive open space to be used for recreation, health, wellbeing, stories, art and nature. It will connect the town and encourage people to visit and linger, all contributing to the economic recovery for the region following covid-19.”

The trust’s chief executive Sara Aspley added: “Consulting with specialist agencies, including Warwickshire Wildlife Trust, we are committed to preserving the critical biodiversity that is supported by this area. This project is a real opportunity to regenerate the riverside while placing its ecological value at the heart of the development in a thoughtful and inspirational way.”

Detailed plans are available for public consultation until January 31.
