Small Stratford charity welcomes much-needed donation

A STRUGGLING Stratford charity impacted by the pandemic has welcomed much-needed support.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) UK, has received £1,000 from Warwickshire Masonic Charitable Association which has helped support SMA through a difficult few months.

The Freemasons have supported the charity – which helps those with the condition – since 2015. And this year’s donation was more valuable than ever as, like many small charities, SMA continues to face a steep decline in income due to the virus crisis.

SMA UK was formed over 30 years ago as and has benefitted from local support over the years, including fundraising events, and famous faces from the RSC, getting behind the charity.

Fundraising manager Caroline Dolan said: “We are really grateful to the Warwickshire Masonic Charitable Association for their generous donation and continued support. This has been a very hard year for the charity as lots of fundraising events have been cancelled so we appreciate every penny that is donated.

“In order to reduce costs, the charity has downsized to smaller premises but remains in Stratford and we continue to offer support to any affected by SMA in Warwickshire and across the UK.”

The condition weakens muscles and affects movement in sufferers. It is thought to affect one in every 6,000 to 10,000 people in the UK.
