£1.8million boost for small and micro-businesses in Stratford district

Stratford Editorial 21st May, 2020   0

STRATFORD District Council is set to receive around £1.8million to support small and micro-businesses with high fixed property-related costs that are not eligible for existing Government grant schemes.

The council is preparing to deliver the new grant scheme and has been asked by the Government to prioritise the following types of businesses for grants:

* B&Bs which pay council tax instead of business rates

* Small businesses in shared offices or other flexible work spaces which do not have their own business rates assessment, such as industrial and science parks, regular market traders, and charity properties in receipt of charitable business rates relief.

A council spokesman said: “This is not intended to be an exhaustive list, but a guide as to the types of uses that the Government considers should be a priority for the scheme.

“Uplift grants are available to businesses with fewer than 50 employees and facing ongoing fixed building related costs.

“Applicants must have been trading since before March 11, and be able to demonstrate that they’ve suffered a significant fall in income due to the coronavirus outbreak.”

More details of the scheme, including how to apply, will be published shortly.
