Work to commence next week on Henley Street improvement project

Stratford Editorial 3rd Jan, 2020   0

A FACELIFT of Stratford’s most famous street will begin shortly.

The project – carried out by Stratford District Council, Warwickshire County Council and the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust – aims to improve Henley Street.

The work, which is set to begin on Wednesday (January 8), includes repaving, new street lighting, the replacement of seating and street furniture and a ‘general decluttering’ of the street which attracts thousands of visitors to see Shakespeare’s Birthplace.

Access and business hours will be maintained during the work which is expected to be completed in April.

The project was awarded £462,000 from the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership (CWLEP) last year in the run up to Coventry being UK City of Culture in 2021 and the Commonwealth Games coming to Birmingham in 2022.

SDC leader Tony Jefferson, who is also board director at CWLEP, said: “These are exciting times for Stratford with this significant investment to revitalise Henley Street as the gateway to one of the world’s great cultural destinations.

“This is crucial at a time when the tourism industry is becoming increasingly more competitive and I’m grateful to the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership for reflecting this with significant investment in our town.

“As with any project on this scale, there will be some level of disruption whilst these works are being carried out and I would like to thank the locals and businesses in the area for their co-operation, patience and understanding.”
