Women's Institute members clean up

Stratford Editorial 7th Apr, 2019   0

TIDY-MINDED women have been cleaning up the streets of Warwickshire.

Members of the Women’s Institute collected 40kg of litter from roadsides in Ashorne and Newbold Pacey when they joined the Great British Spring Clean.

They collected cans, empty plastic cartons, glass bottles, straws and a metal reclining chair complete with cushion.

Group president Trish Handsley said: “We were amazed at the amount of litter we found in the lanes on the outskirts of our village.

“Who on earth thinks it’s OK to throw plastic bottles, cans and fast food wrappers out of their car windows?

“As WI members we stand together to declare that litter – which degrades the beauty of our environment and harms wildlife – is absolutely unacceptable.”

“We’re really proud of the fact that the ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ Campaign was launched after the WI lobbied government about the problem of litter in 1954.”

The group welcomes visitors and new members at its meetings in Ashorne village hall, on the second Thursday of every month, at 7.30pm.
