Artists reveal themselves at the RST

Stratford Editorial 13th Oct, 2018 Updated: 15th Oct, 2018   0

ARTISTS are revealing themselves at the RST in Stratford.

Self-portraits and works by artists including Grayson Perry and Tracey Emin feature in the free Arts Council touring exhibition ‘In My Shoes – Art and the Self since the 1990s’ which can be seen at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre until January 6.

The exhibition explores ways in which UK-based artists have included themselves in their work over the past two decades. Encompassing a range of media including film, photography and sculpture, In My Shoes reflects the ever-increasing interest in self-expression, an interest now seen beyond the art world with the universal ‘selfie’ phenomenon.

The artists’ use of performance creates a parallel to the RSC’s work on stage, as does the exploration of self-identity. Questions of identity are weaved throughout Shakespeare’s plays. His characters’ identities are hidden and revealed, controlled and liberated, empathised with and misunderstood.

The exhibition in the PACCAR Room is open daily from 10am.
