Market town in running for award

ALCESTER High Street is in the running for greatness.

The market town has been nominated by Visit Alcester for this year’s Great British High Street Awards.

Sarah Bassett, the group’s chair and resident of 22 years, said: “It’s a worthy contender because it’s at the heart of our community.

“A huge team of volunteers keep our High Street looking fabulous all year round and together we manage to hold a huge array of festivals.

“We have the Alcester Food Festivals, the Street Market and Alcester Motor Show which all bring in huge crowds.”

It’s not the first time the town’s High Street has been recognised for its character.

High streets across Britain need to hit certain standards to be in with a chance of winning. They need to impress in categories ‘community’, ‘environment’, ‘customer xxperience’ and ‘Digital’.

“I think we will do well because we have a real sense of community, provide excellent service in our shops and are up to date with all of the latest technology,” added Sarah, who also paid tribute to the “great characters” who “make it what it is.”

Shortlisted finalists for the overall prize will be announced in the next two weeks.

The final 13 high streets will then enter a public vote, with the winner picking up £10,000 for the community.

Residents can show their support by using the hashtag – #MyHighStreet on Twitter.
