World record-holder marks major milestone for parkrun

Stratford Editorial 25th Feb, 2018   0

A WORLD record-holder has been pounding the pavements with townspeople to mark a major milestone for Stratford Parkrun.

Long-distance athlete David Moorcroft joined some 400 runners at the Recreation Ground to celebrate the event’s birthday.

Runners took on a 5km run around the grounds before enjoying a slice of birthday cake.

The free Parkrun, which aims to help people stay fit, regularly sees up to 500 people turn out every Saturday at 9am to run around the course.

Joint event director Simon Teale said: “David joined in by running the course himself, giving many Stratford runners the chance to boast of how they ran with the man who held the 5000m British record for 32 years until it was broken in 2016 by Mo Farah.

“We would like to thank the council for its continued support and the contribution of the volunteers who put on the free 5km event every Saturday morning.

“We’re so pleased that parkrun has become a regular feature of Stratford life and we welcome runners and walkers of all abilities and ages.”
