New £10 notes could be worth much more

A SPECIALIST from local auctioneers Warwick & Warwick is urging people to take a close look at their new £10 notes.

Richard Beale, a valuer in the collector’s department at the auction house in Warwick, shared tips on Chris Evans’ Radio 2 show on how to spot a new note that could be worth a small fortune.

The new plastic-coated ten-pound note featuring author Jane Austen goes into circulation today.

And while the majority of notes will be worth their £10 face value, a handful of them will have serial numbers printed on them that specialist collectors find particularly desirable.

Richard explained: “It’s usually the very low serial numbers collectors are after, realistically, below 100 at least”.

When the the new £5 notes were released, there was much speculation about serial numbers such as 007 and AK47 being collectibles – but Richard said this was a bit of an urban myth.

“In reality, there are lots of notes with those serial numbers in circulation.

“But that said – people have had success in selling them on sites like eBay. They’re worth as much as someone is willing to pay!”

Richard got the call from the BBC Radio 2 team after working on TV show ‘Right on the Money’, where he was interviewed by host Dominic Littlewood.

Now it seems he’s landed himself a place as one of the beeb’s go-to experts when they need specialist advice.

Warwick & Warwick is an auction house that specialises in coins, stamps and other collectibles.

Experts offer free valuations, and Richard urges anyone who has something lurking in the back of the loft to come in if they have any sneaking suspicions that it could be something valuable.

“Sometimes people don’t know where to start when it comes valuing things” added Richard.

“We’re happy to help, and give expert advice, with absolutely no obligation.”
