Used needles discovered in abandoned garages

Stratford Editorial 25th Aug, 2017   0

A ‘HORRIFIED’ Stratford mum has spoken out after a used needle lodged itself in her child’s pushchair wheel.

The 18 year-old – who did not wish to be named – was walking along Drayton Avenue with her eight month-old and a friend, when they discovered needles littered in and around a row of vacant garages.

One of them got stuck in the pushchair wheel before her friend was able to kick it away.

She branded the disused garages – littered with needles, rubbish and a mattress in one corner – a ‘crack den’.

The young mum told the Observer: “I felt sick. I was heaving. The sight was making me itch all over.

“What if one the kids had been playing or hiding in the garages and picked one up? I see a lot of kids running around here, so it’s really worrying.”

The police have been informed of the incident but say it is the district council’s responsibility to clear up the needles.

The council had not responded to a request for comment at the time of going to press.
