Pupils swap beds for boxes to raise money for homeless charities

CARDBOARD box and sleeping bags were the only shelter for charitable folk in Stratford who took part in the first Shakespeare Sleepout.

Organised by the Stratford Samaritans and St Basil’s – based at Tyler House in the town – 25 people left the comfort of their own beds behind for one night to raise money and awareness for homelessness.

The sleepers found shelter in cardboard boxes in the grounds of KES to highlight the fact some 4,000 people sleep rough on any one night in the UK.

Rachel Key, Tyler House Hub manager said: “We are delighted that 25 people joined us for the first Shakespeare Sleepout.

“After a lovely day, it was a surprise that the night was a damp and to a chilly two degrees – we found it a challenge to get even a few hours sleep.

“Before everyone got tucked into their cardboard homes, we heard from Stratford Samaritans and St Basils about the work the SleepOut will support.”

The organisers also thanked the DCS Group and Robert Welch for supplying the cardboard boxes, Boston Tea Party for providing soup and cakes for those taking part and rough sleepers in the town, and Tesco for donating hot drinks.
