Orchestra director to jog musical memories of dementia patients

Stratford Editorial 4th Apr, 2017   0

THE ARTISTIC director of a Stratford-based orchestra will be jogging musical memories of people with dementia.

David Curtis, director of Orchestra of The Swan (OOTS), will be running the London Marathon to raise money for the orchestra’s musical therapy programme.

The orchestra regularly holds music sessions in care homes across the Midlands in partnership with music therapy charity Mindsong.

Orchestra spokesperson Lisa-Marie Houghton-Reade said hearing was often the last sense affected by dementia, so music was one of the last means of communication with the outside world.

Heart-warming feedback from therapists who reported responses such as hand squeezing and verbal recognition of the music, had inspired David to run the 26 miles on April 23 to raise money for the programme.
