A RENOWNED pioneer of modern linguistics shared a few words with pupils at Stratford Girls’ Grammar.
Professor David Crystal visited the school to give two lectures on English Language and Literature to an audience of over 200 pupils and their families.
He discussed the divide between literature and language in higher education, arguing the two subjects are too interconnected to be taught separately.
And he explored the ‘Tongue that Shakespeare Spoke’ which described the effect of using ‘original pronunciation’ when performing Shakespeare, rather than the ‘received pronunciation’ the audience is used to hearing from the world of theatre.
Head of English, Joel Cooper said: “We were delighted to have been able to host the evening, and open up the opportunity to other schools and families to join us as well.
“Feedback from our own students has been extremely positive and it demonstrates just how large the impact of our speaker programme really is.”
