Famous Fusilier colours paraded for final time in Warwick

Stratford Editorial 11th Oct, 2016 Updated: 28th Oct, 2016   0

THE COLOURS of the 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers were paraded for a final time in Warwick at the weekend.

Veterans from across the country, together with current troops and cadets, took to the streets of the town on Sunday (October 9) to parade the colours before they were laid in St Mary’s Church. It followed the disbandment of the battalion in 2014 as part of army cuts.

The Regiment has an area headquarters in Warwick, at St John’s House, who keep a Fusilier presence in what is regarded as a home area.

Today, the Regiment has one Fusilier battalion in Tidworth, Wiltshire as Reaction Force armoured infantry. The second is a Reserve battalion in Newcastle, as light role infantry. Both are well manned, busy on operations and training around the world.

The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers has a long history dating back to 1680. The Fusiliers have been recruiting in Warwickshire since the early 1700s, and many ‘Warwickshire Lads’ have served bravely and proudly in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, the Royal Warwickshire Fusiliers and now the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers – traditionally, in the now disbanded 2nd Battalion.

* THE Royal Regiment of Fusiliers Museum (Royal Warwickshire) in Warwick is running a series of digital workshop for young people.

The workshop on October 25 will be run by award-winning experimental games designer, John Sear and will create an audio trail in the museum using mobiles and apps.

The workshops runs at St John’s House from 2.15pm to 3.45pm, and costs £4.

Places are limited and must be booked by calling 01926 491653.
