Police crackdown on illegal fishing

Stratford Editorial 6th Jul, 2016 Updated: 28th Oct, 2016   0

A CRACKDOWN on fish theft in Earlswood has led to five people being reported for having no fishing licence.

Warwickshire Police’s Operation Leviathon is designed to educate anglers on British conservation-based angling law and reinforce the message it is an offence to take fish from rivers, lakes and waterways without permission.

It is also hoped the campaign, which sees officers from forces across the country team up with the Angling Trust and other agencies, will help stop fish poaching, anti-social behaviour and illegal fishing on the waterways.

Police officers worked with a team from the Environmental Agency for a patrol in and around the Mereside Fishery area and the land around Earlswood Lakes.

In addition to five people having no fishing licence, one was reported for fishing with more rods than their licence permitted while another was found to be in possession of cannabis.

More patrols are planned over the summer.
