DINOSAUR hunting Stratford youngsters have been digging up the past.
Pupils from Willows Primary School joined staff from Heritage Education for a day of fossil hunting.
Armed with trowels and magnifying lenses they discovered Warwickshire’s Jurassic landscape at Cross Hands Quarry near Chipping Norton.
Among the finds were brachiopods and bivalves which were shelled sea creatures and echinoids – also known as sea urchins.
Pupils took their finds back to the classroom for further study.
Class teacher Sally Templeton said: “We had a fabulous day. The children found lots and lots of amazing fossils!”
Cross Hands Quarry is a Site of Special Scientific Interest as it shows the underlying structure of the Warwickshire area and the effects of geological forces over millions of years.
It is rich in fossils from 160 million years ago and during Jurassic times was submerged under a shallow sea.
