STRATFORD-upon-Avon Boat Club’s adaptive section competed at both the British Masters Championships in Nottingham and the Marlow Town Regatta.

The highlight of both events saw 14-year-old Edward Owen-Smith win the Chelton Cup at Marlow competing against the fastest male scullers from across the country.

Owen-Smith faced a Marlow sculler in the final as the home rower made a significantly faster start.

However, Owen-Smith showed better technique and fitness to claim a convincing victory.

In the mixed doubles event, mother and son partnership Paola and Ian Ward caught a buoy early in their race as they lost by a couple of lengths.

And the club’s adaptive rowers also competed at the Masters Championships for the first time ever.

Stratford scullers Gillian Middleton and Ricky Clutterbuck finished second and third in their respective events.

The club’s head adaptive coach, Mark Dewdney said: “Both sculled well against some first class opposition.

“I am very pleased with them both.

“We attend some events to ensure the sport expands.

“The four clubs who competed at Nottingham will hopefully ensure the same opportunity for other adaptive rowers in the future.”

Stratford’s masters rowers also took to the water in Nottingham as Ellie Davis and Gina Fusco raced in the 2x women’s masters 50-plus event.

In a final of six crews, Davis and Fusco hit a buoy when well-placed in the final 200 metres but recovered to miss out on a medal by just one second.

Davis said: “Despite no medal, we were pleased with our performance coming fourth out of 24 crews competing in women’s masters 50-plus category.”
