WORK to improve busy roundabouts in Leamington has been completed.
The Queensway and Ford roundabouts have been the focus of a year-long revamp that has seen traffic lights installed, additional lanes, together with a shared footway and dedicated off-road cycle routes, and improved crossings for both pedestrians and cyclists.
Highway chiefs say the multi-million project, funded through a combination of developer contributions and £3.6million from the Local Growth Fund and administered by the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership, will deliver long-lasting benefits for the region.
Warwickshire County Council transport spokeswoman Coun Jennifer Warren said: “We are delighted to see this Europa Way Project at the A452 Ford Foundry (Myton Road/Old Warwick Road) and Queensway roundabouts completed on time and on budget.
“We know it’s been disruptive at times, with nearby roadworks and diversions adding to the pressure, and we thank you for your patience while we carried out these much-needed improvements.
“This is a transformative scheme that will help improve and control traffic flow and make active travel safer and more accessible.”
“It is a fantastic example of partnership working between the council, contractors, and the community – and one that will deliver safer, greener, and more sustainable travel for Warwickshire for many years to come.”
But there has already been criticism from some drivers, who have complained about the potential for accidents with entry and exit lanes not matching up, and also delays at the new traffic lights.
A WCC spokesperson said they were aware of concerns raised and were closely monitoring, adding that any issues identified would be addressed accordingly.
The work on the roundabouts was part of the multi-million pound scheme to improve the main route in and out of Leamington from the M40.
