Wright takes top spot at Milton Keynes Marathon

KATE WRIGHT gained a fabulous result in the Milton Keynes Marathon as she finished as first placed woman in a personal best time of 2:58.30, writes Danny Tolhurst.

The Stratford Athletic Club star improved on her time set in Barcelona last year by over four minutes.

Kate reached the halfway mark in 1:28.18 and ran a very strong 1:30.12 for the second half.

She was ecstatic with her achievement, saying: “It was all about the nutrition. With a bit of advice from club members, and eating like a pig, I stood at the start line knowing that I was going to run sub-three hours.

“It was a lovely feeling. As the leading lady I had an official cycle just ahead of me the whole way. I kept talking to try and distract from the job in hand.”

STRATFORD AC commenced the senior track and field season in good style at the Midland Track & Field League Division Four meeting at Banbury.

The team finished in a creditable fourth place, which provides a sound platform for the rest of the summer.

Notable performances included those of Rory Dwyer who achieved first place in the men’s 100m and high jump. Issy Cain-Daley was also successful in the women’s high jump, while Emma Slevin won the 1,500m comfortably.

The women’s 4x400m relay performance was the highlight of the day. The team of Jess Sheppard, Abi Flynn, Issy Cain-Daley and Emma Slevin led from start to finish, claiming a dominant victory and beating the club record by four seconds.

There were also promising debuts from Henry Grisenthwaite, Tara Smyth, Dan Boyd, Hannah Bexson and Seb Hopper.

The next fixture is at Corby AC on Saturday, June 6.
