Regatta is an occasion to savour

THE RYBROOK Stratford Boat Club Regatta proved another great success as excellent racing and great participation from crews and the crowd made for a fine occasion.

Crews from as far afield as Northwich, Cardiff, Llandaff, Cheltenham, Pengwern and Holloway Scullers from Northampton, as well as ‘local’ sister clubs from Evesham, Worcester, Warwick and home clubs King Edward VI Grammar School and Stratford itself were all in action.

Glyn Hawkins, Veterans’ Vice-Captain and lead committee member for the club’s refurbishment, said: “It was a great opportunity for Stratford Boat Club to present our revised plans for how we are going to tackle the exciting next phase of our refurbishment.

“With our locally-based architects MRT, we know these plans are well costed and realistic. We have the planning permission, all we need now is the finance and we can continue to provide sport for all ages not only for Stratford itself but also the greater Warwickshire area.”

Jen Clements, Stratford Boat Club’s Regatta Secretary and Captain, said: “We were very heartened by the huge turnout from local and distant clubs and the interest from the public. A massive thanks to all our sponsors especially Rybrook Mini, hard-working Stratford Boat Club members, visiting crews, umpires and officials and especially the public for supporting the event.”

Felix Badcock, Stratford Boat Club’s President, commented. “It was a long day’s racing from 8am to 5.15pm. Some 350 beefburgers, 40lb of sausages, 20lb of bacon, 25kg of sliced onions and 700 buns all from local suppliers were consumed as well as dozens of cakes and snacks – what a magnificent day topped by great racing!”

Paul Hazelwood said: “Stratford Boat Club’s next event is the Fun Regatta on Saturday, July 12. This is a much more ‘relaxed’ event with scratch teams from local Stratford, Warwickshire and area companies and organisations.

“We give them three hours coaching, a boat and cox and organise a regatta for them! There are bound to be thrills and spills! Come and see the ‘other side’ of rowing’.”
