ALCESTER ACADEMY players proved to be the queens of the court when they won an under 14 girls’ basketball tournament organised by Stratford District Council.

The competition took place at Stratford Leisure Centre and featured five enthusiastic teams and produced a host of exciting matches.

Alcester Academy, Alcester Grammar, Shipston High, Stratford School and Studley High played in a round-robin league which was fast-paced, skilful and a credit to the players and their coaches.

In a nailbiting tournament, Alcester Academy finished with a 100 per cent record and deservedly lifted the winners’ trophy.

Danny Tolhurst, Active Communities Officer at Stratford District Council, said: “Every player displayed a superb attitude to the game with the emphasis being on fair play, enjoyment and team spirit.

“Hopefully some of the girls involved will have been bitten by the basketball bug and become keen players.”

Leicester Riders and Great Britain internationals Jamell Anderson and Robyn Lewis were on hand to provide tips, pose for photographs and enjoy the action.

The tournament was organised by Stratford District Council in partnership with Coventry, Solihull & Warwickshire Sport and Everyone Active.

Match officials and scorers were provided by the British Basketball League and Leicester Riders club members.
