Town centre Shakespeare statue plans withdrawn

Stratford Editorial 10th Mar, 2016 Updated: 28th Oct, 2016   0

PLANS for a new statue of Shakespeare in Stratford’s town centre have been withdrawn amid safety fears.

The 15-foot tall bronze statue was commissioned by businessman Tony Bird to stand on the roundabout at the top of Bridge Street.

Stratford Town Council, Warwickshire County Council’s highways and Stratford district councillor Jason Fojtik all opposed the planning application arguing it would be a distraction to drivers.

Concern was also raised over the possible danger of tourists trying to get onto the roundabout to get a picture with the statue.

Coun Fojtik said: ” I have no objection to the statue itself and hope we see it somewhere else in the town.”
