Terrified people run in fear of their lives during Shipston knife drama

TERRIFIED people ran in fear of their lives as man ran amok with a knife in Shipston.

It happened on Monday after PC Craig Purcell and PCSO Andy Steventon of Shipston Police went to an address in the town to arrest a man wanted for questioning over the assault of a six year-old girl near Shipston Scout Hut over the weekend. He was alleged to have kicked the girl from behind causing her to fall to the ground where she sustained injuries to her legs and arms.

When the officers arrived the man refused to come out of the house – so a police drone was brought in.

But when the man spotted the drone hovering at the back of the property he ran out the front towards PC Purcell brandishing a kitchen knife with an 8 inch blade.

PC Purcell fortunately managed to move out of the way but the man ran towards the town centre waving the knife as terrified members of the public ran.

PC Purcell and PCSO Steventon cornered the man before chasing him back to his home address where he hid for the next hour.

A police negotiator was called in but before they arrived the officers managed to convince the man to give himself up.

A 38 year-old man was taken to Leamington Police Station and held overnight before being interviewed the following day.

He was then charged with assault of a six year-old girl, assault of another woman last month, and possession of a knife in a public place.

He appeared before magistrates on Wednesday and was remanded in custody until September 8 when he will appear at Warwick Crown Court.
