Stratford pupil wings her way into national science competition final

A TALENTED young science whizz from Stratford has winged her way into the final of a national competition.

Saanvi Pantankar from King Edward VI School is one of 19 students from across the West Midlands to make it to the final of The Big Bang UK Young Scientists and Engineers Competition.

Saanvi beat off competition from over 800 other entrants with a project titled ‘Biomimicry in aircraft design’. Her aircraft design emulates nature’s optimized structures to make it more efficient.

She will now go through a final round of judging and receive feedback from industry experts, before the winners are announced at an awards ceremony at The Big Bang Fair at the NEC in June.

A sustainable floating farm, an AI-powered recycling bin and renewable energy generation through everyday movement, are just some of the other innovative science, engineering, technology and maths (STEM) projects battling it out for coveted top prizes.

Last year Grace Palmer from WMG Academy for Young Engineers Solihull won the senior engineering category for her project ‘Thrive transfer aid’. Inspired by the challenges faced by her young cousin, Grace wanted to find ways to improve the lives of disabled children and their families. She created a new product to help transfer children comfortably whether that’s from bed to a desk chair or from a wheelchair to a rollercoaster.
