SHAKESPEARE Lions Club is celebrating reaching a major milestone in providing sound and vision to those in need.

Volunteers have collected 10,000 used spectacles and 1,000 hearing aids in Stratford district over the past 12 months for the Lions Clubs International eyesight programme Sightfirst.

The spectacles and hearing aids are sent via the Lions Eye Health Programme where they are tested and serviced and sent to needy people in the third world.

Lions Clubs International support Moorfields Eye Hospital in the UK, and have built an eye hospital in Ghana. They are particularly interested in the early detection and timely treatment of diabetic eye disease, glaucoma and macular degeneration.

Shakespeare Lions spokesman Tony Jones thanked the opticians and dedicated outlets for their participation in the Sightfirst collection scheme.

Collection bins and participating opticians can be found in Stratford at the district council’s Elizabeth House offices;

opticians Harrison’s; Specsavers; Vision Express; Walford & Round and Zeiss; supermarkets Morrison’s and Tesco; and

at Andrew Tissington opticians in Henley.
