RSC voice coach celebrates 90th birthday

THERE was a keen ear listening to a rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ in Stratford this week.

The RSC’s legendary voice coach Cicely Berry turned 90 on Tuesday (May 17) and the ocassion was celebrated with tea and cake at the theatre company’s Chapel Lane offices.

Gregory Doran, RSC artistic director, said: “Cis Berry has worked for the RSC for the best part of five decades, and has transformed our industry’s approach to voice and text.”

Cicely, who remains an advisory director of the RSC, was voice director of the company for 45 years, and has taught across the world.




She has worked with everyone from Sean Connery to Samuel L Jackson, Emily Watson to Helen Hunt.

David Threlfall, who is currently starring as Don Quixote in the Swan, also presented the birthday girl with a bouquet of flowers.
