HOUSEHOLDERS in Stratford are hoping to add a few pounds to the price of their property by landing Mayfair on the Monopoly board.

After the town won the public vote to secure its very own version of the world famous board game, residents have been voting for the places to be included on the playing board.

And it would appear there has been an early scramble from many to secure the most expensive property Mayfair for their own street or road in the hope that it may push up real property prices.

But they are unlikely to be successful as Mayfair will most probably go to one of the town’s major landmarks – such as the Birthplace or the RST.

A spokesman for Winning Moves UK, which will make the Stratford version under license from Monopoly owners Hasbro, told The Observer: “Since voting started we have had a wonderful array of suggestions for all aspects of the board.

“But what has come over loud and clear is that a lot of places – we are sure rightly – believe they merit Mayfair, which is the top position on the board.

“We have created boards all across the world and Stratford-upon-Avon appears to be the poshest place on the planet. One or two suggestions have even said that by being on Mayfair their property prices could shoot up.”

Winning Moves UK’s spokesman praised Stratfordians for getting behind the vote.

He added: “The response to the new board so far has been overwhelming and far exceeded our expectations.

“A couple or so have said we should put coffee houses on the four corner squares because there’s one on every corner in Stratford.

“Thank you to everyone who has voted and do please keep sending in these great suggestions.”

Much nominated places to date include Bancroft Gardens; Henley Street, and the Swan Theatre.

Voting closes on April 30. The Stratford version of the game is set to be in the shops by October.
