Hospital bosses appeal 'requiring improvement' rating

HOSPITAL bosses have lodged an appeal after healthcare inspectors told them they must make improvements.

Earlier this year South Warwickshire Foundation Trust (SWFT) – which runs hospitals in Warwick, Leamington, Stratford and Shipston– was inspected by health regulators the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Inspectors rated the trust as ‘good’ in the caring and responsive categories, but for safety, effectiveness and leadership the trust was marked as needing improvement.

Trust bosses say the score was wrong and have submitted an appeal, which is set to be answered in around two months.

In the meantime they have made a number of immediate changes to the way the service is run in a bid to improve their rating.

These include holding regular risk assessments, completing cleaning schedules, ensuring staff receive training and that complaints are reported.

The trust say some improvements – such as ensuring interpreters were available, monitoring pain scores, performing less caesareans and ensuring training was finished – are all on track to be completed.

SWFT chairman Russell Hardy said: “We are proud of all of our teams. They deliver excellent services day in day out to the people of Warwickshire and it is pleasing to see so many areas highlighted as good practice.

“We have not seen another inspection report that has so many ‘good’ areas that has not then been rated overall as at least ‘good’.”

In the report inspectors praised some of the trust’s services, including the Central England Rehabilitation Unit (CERU) which supports people who have suffered brain injuries. They were also marked as outstanding for community nursing and the Warwick Hospital A&E department.

Overall 78 per cent of the CQC’s findings were ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’.

But the trust joined 60 per cent of others across the country to be rated as requiring improvement.

Chief executive Glen Burley said: “We employ some of the best clinicians in the country and are extremely proud of the services that we deliver across Warwickshire and of our teams that provide them.

“The report confirms that we have been recognised nationally in many areas.

“There were only three recommendations that the CQC highlighted as important and these have all been addressed. We have requested a re-inspection at the earliest convenience with a different inspection team.”

The trust say their rating went against many of the national indicators which place them in the top 40 in the country.
