A COLOURFUL campaign to highlight dog fouling in Moreton Morrell has been launched.

The parish council is keen to tackle the issue and has set about reinforcing anti dog fouling laws by implementing a campaign across the village.

Educational leaflets spelling out the dangers of dog mess to children, adults and livestock have been delivered to every household in the village, together with a supply of dog poo bags.

Councillors have also been joined by concerned villagers, who are encouraging others to clean up footpaths, play areas and green spaces.

And in a bid to combat the serious health hazard issue, which the council say is caused by irresponsible dog owners allowing their dogs to foul in public areas, offensive deposits are being sprayed with a biodegradable fluorescent pink chalk spray.

Coun Anne Parry, chairman of Moreton Morrell Parish Council, said: “The combination of the leaflets, ‘poo’ bags and pink spray appears to be hitting the message home to dog owners, and spraying areas where dog mess has been deposited has certainly highlighted the extent of the problem in our village.

“We’re now having to consider the placement of more dog bins around the village as we encourage owners to get into the habit of picking up their dog’s mess and disposing the bags in the most appropriate way.”

Urging dog owners to take responsibility for their pets, she added: “It does seem as though we are getting through but we need to keep reinforcing the message so we can finally put a stop to this dreadful anti-social behaviour, which is being caused by a few people.

“If you are a dog owner you have a legal duty to clean up every time your dog messes in a public place and anyone caught in the act of not clearing up their dog’s mess could face a fine of up to £1,000.”
